“What Remains” is a long-duration exhibition presented by The Byre in collaboration with Bullseye Projects in Caithness, running from August 2024 to May 2026.

The exhibition is grounded in the geological and atmospheric character of Caithness, where landscape is read as a slow accumulation of time, erosion, and transformation. During repeated explorations of the coastline, attention is drawn to the subtle inscriptions of water, wind, and tidal movement—forces that continually rewrite the surface of the land.
Rugged rock formations rise from cliff edges and emerge through the sea, while waterfalls are lifted into mist by coastal winds, dissolving into air. At dawn and dusk, the ocean becomes a shifting basin of light and motion, its surface constantly reconfigured by atmospheric pressure and flow. These processes are understood not as background conditions, but as active agents shaping form.
Through this lens, Caithness is approached as a living archive of materials and forces—where landscape is neither fixed nor finished, but perpetually unfolding.
Within the exhibition, this investigation extends into material practice. Vessels are formed through processes such as lathe-turned wax, wheel-thrown clay, and silicone moulding, each technique preserving traces of gesture and motion. Variations in glass flow, opacity, texture, and colour register the presence of movement within matter itself.
In parallel with the geological forces shaping Caithness, the works explore how material transformation carries time, pressure, and memory—revealing continuity between landscape and object, erosion and making, force and form.
